About Us

Stroke is the nation’s fourth leading cause of death and the number one cause of adult disability. Americans experience more than 750,000 strokes each year, resulting in annual direct and indirect costs of more than $50 billion.

The mission of the Delaware Stroke Initiative (DSI) is to improve stroke prevention, risk assessment, and recovery to residents of the state of Delaware with special focus on low income and minority individuals.

DSI was founded by Ellen Barker, RN in 1997. She served for many years on the board of directors and was instrumental in developing a stroke risk assessment tool, starting the support group for stroke survivors and their families, recruiting other board members from the business and medical communities and launching the annual stroke education conference.

The DSI is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization.
